We have already spoken about taking a leap, gaining confidence and trying new things and embracing new languages. But what if you’re stuck in a loop of infinite monotony?
In spite of the fact of pursuing an intensive fast-track language course, living in Germany and being surrounded by German vibes all the time, I was stuck in a loop of feeling like I was speaking horrible German.
A few instructors advised me to watch German series, shows, and movies. All that would help me to take my speaking skills to the next level. I was like, what is the point of watching when I don’t understand the majority of the stuff? But yet went ahead with it as I was interested (read: had no other option).
I started watching some series, and one was about inviting friends and acquaintances for dinner at home.
I wonder if there are shows like still run on TLC.
The show awarded the best host/hostess. The show was basically like a reality programme, showcasing clips of cleaning the apartment, creating an ambience, choosing the right coloured tablecloth, choosing the right combination of flowers…you get the point. Everything was handpicked. This was followed by an elaborate set of appetizers, desserts and a complete feast. I seriously wished I was there to eat all that.
I felt connected a lot with it: it mirrored my personality. You must get a lot about me from that sentence. So, from a mandatory show, it became one of the chosen!
This again highlights the fact that the key to enjoying learning the language is to find some personal connection with it. Things come easily. I guess this is true in any field of life, not just language learning.
We are just connecting with our roots – changing the process from mechanical to human. The essence lies in putting life in our endeavours to watch them develop and live them.
Remember this, next time you host a dinner: the flowers are key.
I repeat, the flowers are key…
Bis dann,
